Hearing John Swardson play live is definitely entertaining, but entertainer he is not. If you hope to hear covers of “American Pie” or “Sweet Caroline” you ought look elsewhere. Swardson is a true lyricist with original songs known to reach deep into the soul, delivered with a wry smile and unique brand of classic comfort. He does throw a few covers in here and there. You might be familiar with them if you liked the B sides of old 45’s including “You Picked A Fine Time To Leave Me Lucille” and “Pancho & Lefty."

While Duluth’s economic struggles of the early 1970s are well-documented, its incredible Bicentennial boom is a story waiting to be told. In 1975 and 1976, dozens of diverse ethnic festivals celebrated Northland heritage, sparking major community improvements—including the renovation of the St. Louis County Depot itself. Duluth civic and commercial leaders jumped on the bandwagon early, making Duluth the very first official Bicentennial Community in Minnesota. Join Dr. Thomas Saylor, Professor of History Emeritus at Concordia University, St. Paul, for this "Star-Spangled" edition.
