Duluth Arts & History Walking Tour

Walking Tours of the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial led by Heidi Bakk-Hansen and the Chief Buffalo Mural at Gichi-Ode’ Akiing Park led by Moira Villiard. Local historian Heidi Bakk-Hanson will discuss the history of the Duluth lynchings which claimed the lives of 3 black men, Elias Clayton, Elmer Jackson and Issac McGhie. Learn about the history of this tragic and grim event and the creation of the first ever memorial to victims of lynching. Participants will then join mural artist Moira Villiard to walk through the new Chief Buffalo murals painted by Indigenous artists and community members this summer in Gichi-Ode’ Akiing Park. Learn about the significance of Chief Buffalo, the historical and contemporary life of the Anishinabe people, and the stories and artistic process behind the murals.
