Last-Lap Drama Gives Indy To Franchitti

Fri. Jun. 1st, 2012  |  John Gilbert

Once again, the Indianapolis 500 exceeded expectations. For the second year in a row, and under nearly identical circumstances, a finish that might have been the most astounding in the race’s history wound up being crushed by a cruel twist,…

Thanks Northern Wisconsin

Mon. Jun. 11th, 2012  |  Paul Whyte

On Tuesday, June 5, 2012, it was a sunny afternoon in Superior, Wisc. as people shuffled in and out of the Salvation Army building on Hughitt Ave. and Broadway St. Registered voters were lined up at tables where they could get their number, get their ballot, and then vote either for or against a recall of Gov. Scott Walker. A number of other non-registered voters sat in folding chairs lined up against the walls and diligently filled out their information in order to vote. The number of new voters indicated that this recall was certainly something that people were taking seriously regardless of political views. Scott Walker would have been the third governor ever to be recalled by his constituents in the United States, but by 9 p.m. on this Tuesday evening it was pretty clear that he had pulled through and would continue as Wisconsin’s Governor.

Wisconsin Recall Elections: Are the 20 Year-old Methods of Ralph Reed and the Christian Coalition Coming to Fruition?

Mon. Jun. 11th, 2012  |  Gary G. Kohls, MD

”It (the Christian Coalition’s political agenda) is like guerrilla warfare. If you reveal your location, all it does is allow your opponent to improve his artillery bearings. It’s better to move quietly, with stealth, under cover of night. You’ve got two choices: You can wear camies and shimmy along on your belly, or you can put on a red coat and stand up for everyone to see. It comes down to whether you want to be the British army in the Revolutionary War or the Viet Cong. History tells us which tactic was more effective.” -- Ralph Reed, (Los Angeles Times - 3-22-92)

“On The Same Night The Hogs Ate Willie.....”

Mon. Jun. 11th, 2012  |  Ed Raymond

I’ve never had much truck for the South and Rednecks. Corky and I lived in Washington, D.C., Parkfairfax, Virginia, and New Topsail Island, North Carolina, for the three years I was assigned to Quantico, Virginia, and Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, as a Marine Corp officer. This was before civil integration of the races but after the integration of the military, before the Civil Rights Act, during the “Separate But Equal” fiasco, and right in the middle

Fukushima Contamination Vast & Persistent

Mon. Jun. 11th, 2012

There is relentless news from the global radiation disaster at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi reactor complex. Yet if commercial media don’t ignore it entirely, it tends to downplay the instability plaguing the three destroyed reactors, their leaking waste fuel pools, and the widespread and long-lasting contamination that has begun dramatically to corrupt the food chain.

If I were king, boy, things would be different

Mon. Jun. 11th, 2012  |  Forrest Johnson

If I were king and I allowed voting, which I would because I would be a friendly king, I would first require all citizens to pass a simple test. A very simple test made up of very simple questions. Pick a single question and find the answer. You can use a calculator if you must. You can use an encyclopedia. It is an open book test.

Army Worms March On

Mon. Jun. 11th, 2012  |  Ralph LaPlant

It if isn’t the mosquitoes or deer flies, it’s the army worms. During the past few summers it appears we have been plagued with these creatures. They visit us every 10 to 15 years and it appears we are in the middle of the current visit, which will probably be peaking for a few more years.

The Graduate

Mon. Jun. 11th, 2012

I had a rummage sale at my house this past weekend. I’m not sure why I ever agree to do anything like that. The whole situation creeps me out. As vocal as I am about my opinions, I’m actually very introverted. I don’t like special attention or focus, at least not to my face. So strangers coming into my driveway and asking me about my personal life, which I obviously willingly put on display for them to ask about, ends up being a sickly, ironic act of torture for me.
