Smilin’ Tom Tiffany: The 19th century wants you back where you belong

Jim Lundstrom

I try to avoid commercial TV for a variety of reasons, but mostly because of the commercials. YouTube is such a great source for obscure things that I’m often on it, but have to spend a lot of time muting the ads.

Right-wing nuts are buying a lot of time on YouTube, and I just saw Smilin’ Tom Tiffany’s despicable scare tactic ad, showing what a bootlicking asswipe he is by following the playbook of his corrupt boss in the White House.

Tiffany is running to represent the people of Wisconsin as its governor.

All I can ask is how can such a dope even be considered for such an important position?

I lived for many years in Wisconsin. I know most Wisconsinites are good people, despite being held in a political stranglehold for many years by fearful, backwards Republicans like Smilin’ Tom. They have made politics in Wisconsin a disgusting algae-filled swamp reminiscent of their leader’s comically failed reflecting pool.

There is no other way to say it: Republicans today are awful people, and Smilin’ Tom represents the worst of what they have become.

Smilin’ Tom has taken up the old McCarthy cudgel that his big dum(b) boss likes to swing – that Democrats are really communists. And you know what communists are. Right? They’re goddmaned communists!

If you haven’t seen Smilin’ Tom’s radical MAGA ad, good for you. It’s a fear-filled diatribe that might have been scripted by the team at the state-run media known as Fox News. Democrats are really communists who want to abort your babies and eat your guns. Or maybe it’s eat your babies and abort your guns. Or both.

The most amusing part of the strategy is how outdated it feels. Watching these ads is like finding a dusty box of old McCarthy-era propaganda scripts in a basement, crossing out “The Soviet Union” and hastily scribbling in “Madison, Wisconsin.”

Instead of debating actual 2026 problems — like rural hospital closures or property taxes/affordability or any number of real issues — the Smilin’ Tom campaign is treating voters to a retro ghost story about a communist takeover happening right next to a Culver’s drive-thru.

According to the dramatic tone of these ads, Wisconsin isn’t just electing a governor, it is holding the line against a catastrophic invasion of – guess what?

Yup, commie hordes.

Opponent Francesca Hong talks about fixing local roads and funding childcare. Tiffany’s ads see right through this clever ruse: obviously, public road repair is just the first gateway step to a mandatory government takeover of your cheese curds.

In his silly ads, Smilin’ Tom wants to be the “Firewall of Freedom,” turning Wisconsin borders into the Berlin Wall in order to keep the commies outside at bay.  Apparently, if Tiffany loses, the Department of Natural Resources will be replaced by a politburo, and the Green Bay Packers will be forced to collectively share their touchdowns with the Chicago Bears.

It’s Joseph McCarthy incarnate. Except McCarthy was a drunk, and the only thing Smilin’ Tom drinks is tainted milk from the MAGA teat. Look at those rosy cheeks!

Like the late Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy, Smilin’ Tom grew up on a farm. He thinks that gives him down-home credentials. Big deal. Ed Gein also grew up on a farm and nobody wanted him for governor either.

Smilin’ Tom is more like an uneducated 19th century farm boy who was suddenly transported into the 21st century and understands none of it. It’s a big, scary world out there for little Smilin’ Tom Tiffany from the 19th century. So he tries to spread his fear of the big, new world to fellow gullibles (aka obviously simple-minded Republicans).

Let’s look at where Smilin’ Tom stands on several pertinent issues:

• ON THE POS CURRENTLY SERVING AS U.S. PRESIDENT: Smilin’ Tom votes 100 percent in goosestep with the creep who will go down in history as America’s worst and most embarassing president (twice). Trump gave Smilin’ Tom his “Complete and Total Endorsement,” which should be more than enough to prevent him serving in any public office.

• TRUMP’S IRAN WAR: Whatever Der Fuhrer wants, Der Fuhrer gets. More illegal war? Sure. He’s the boss.

• THE 2020 ELECTION: Smilin’ Tom again follows orders – he was one of the members of Congress who voted against certifying the 2020 election results, and still refuses to acknowledge Joe Biden’s 2020 victory in Wisconsin, aligning perfectly with Trump’s crazy narrative.

• AI DATA CENTERS: Favors an approach to encourage technology investments; supports industry-friendly regulations. Kickbacks welcome! It’s become a GOP tradition.

• ENERGY & UTILITIES: Backs traditional energy sources and market-based distribution. Just like Der Fuhrer, has a deep-seated fear of windmills.

• HOUSING: Prefers private developer incentives and reducing regulations to encourage housing growth. As a Congressman, he missed all three votes on a sweeping federal housing affordability bill.

• HEALTHCARE: Opposes federal healthcare expansions; voted to reduce spending on Medicaid and end Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies. He favors free-market approaches and reducing government-subsidized programs

• RESPECT FOR MARRIAGE ACT: In 2022, Tiffany voted against the bipartisan bill that codified federal protections for same-sex and interracial marriages. His opponents argue that voting against the Respect for Marriage Act and opposing federal anti-discrimination protections reflects an outdated view of American society, and that denying federal recognition to diverse family structures ignores decades of social progress and legal precedents, which pretty much summarizes Smilin’ Tom’s view of all social progress made since the 19th century. What, women get to vote?

• THE EQUALITY ACT: He voted against this federal legislation, which aimed to explicitly ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in areas like housing, employment, and education.

As a former Wisconsin resident with family and many good friends still residing there, I hope Democrats have a gubernatorial candidate that can stop Wisconsin from returning to the 19th century with Smilin’ Tom. If that unthinkable thing were to happen, Wisconsin is in for big trouble WHEN the terrible Trump regime topples.

So, we must hope the stink of Trump is more than enough to end Smilin’ Tom’s political career on Nov. 3.
