Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey drew the same connection arguing that “Trump putting a 50 per cent tariff on Canada in response to the wildfire smoke is like an arsonist trying to collect on the insurance policy after the house burns down.”

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul was blunter. “Only Donald Trump could see wildfire smoke and decide the answer is more tariffs,” she wrote.

Washington Senator Patty Murray was blunt in her comments posted to social media: “Yet another absurd and harmful escalation in Trump’s idiotic trade war with our close friend and ally,” she wrote on X. “Trump’s tariffs continue to hurt Americans and Canadians alike.”
