This fugugly loudmouth is THE Ugly American.

According to Wikipedia the phrase “ugly American” refers to “a pejorative stereotype depicting U.S. citizens abroad as loud, arrogant, ethnocentric and ignorant of local cultures.”

It is from the title of a 1958 Graham Greene novel (and a 1963 movie) which was critical of arrogant, self-absorbed politicians and diplomats and the incompetent American foreign policy in Southeast Asia.

Goodreads says the novel is a “portrait of American foreign policy gone dangerously wrong – and how it might be fixed.” The book is set in a fictional country but obviously is about Vietnam. That debacle began with U.S. support for the French in 1950 and escalated after the French were defeated in 1954 and abandoned their colony.

Donald Trump epitomizes an “ugly American” in his personal and public behavior. Since January 20, 2025 we have been experiencing an avalanche of outrageous, irresponsible, chaotic and dangerous domestic and foreign policies.

A list of Trump’s ugly statements, harmful policies and bad decisions would fill an encyclopedia. The evidence that our country is in crisis is everywhere. From major disasters like the war with Iran or destroying relations with our friends in Europe to small issues like funding for local libraries and museums to the petty arrogance of putting his name on everything, Trump has been an embarrassment to our nation.

Recently when asked about his administration’s committing war crimes Trump said, “Having a nuclear weapon, allowing a sick country with demented leaders to have a nuclear weapon. That’s a war crime.” He was referring to Iran, and his bogus justification for starting the war, but his words are an accurate description of the USA under Donald Trump.

On Tuesday, April 7, 2026, Trump threatening Iran with total annihilation. Specifically he said “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,” unless his demands to open the Strait of Hormuz were met. Obviously this was a threat to use nuclear weapons. This was a public declaration that he was prepared to commit genocide and war crimes. If this is not “demented” leadership, what is?

If we, as a nation, do not stop the criminal and immoral behavior of our highest representative what have we become?

One hallmark of a dictator is the building of monuments to the “great leader.” Trump has proven his dictatorial ambitions, and desire for aggrandizement, in numerous ways. The most tacky and expensive is his destruction of the East Wing of the White House to build a gaudy ballroom.

Another is the “Arc de Trump,” a 250 foot (19 story) monstrosity with a gold angel figure on top (allegedly Lady Liberty) to allegedly honor the 250th anniversary of the country. This $100 million eyesore is moving forward – thanks to Trump packing the approval board with sycophants – despite unprecedented public opposition.

These are just the two biggest of numerous “beautification,” remodeling and renovation projects initiated by Trump. According to Neil Flanagan, a D.C. architect and public building historian, Trump is treating the city “like it’s his personal country club” (taking over D.C.’s three public golf courses is on his list). How much is Trump and his family pocketing from these ventures?

The ironic tragedy is that hundreds of millions are being spent on these whims of the “chosen one” while funding for the arts, science, education, medical research, public health and even the National Weather Service are being cut.

Then there are the giant, multi-story banners with Trump’s picture hanging on public buildings in D.C. Trump and his allies have been naming and re-naming buildings, airports, roads, government  programs and battleships after the man who says “I run the country and the world.”

The new Trump class battleship is a dictatorial whim that makes no military sense. The Kennedy Center added Trump’s name. The United States Institute of Peace (which Elon Musk illegally tried to abolish) has become, ironically, the “Trump Institute for Peace.” The “Trump Gold Card” for $1 million sells legal residency to wealthy immigrants. TrumpRX and Trump Accounts for children are fake solutions but bear his name.

Trump will be the first sitting president to have his signature on currency. The U.S. Mint is planning a commemorative coin with his mug shot. The “America the Beautiful” national park pass for 2026 will have his picture (along with George Washington’s) instead of the usual nature scene.

Don’t forget the military parade last June supposedly for the Army’s 250th anniversary but coinciding with Trump’s birthday.

Still not convinced Trump is acting like a dictator? No president has ever come close to this level of egotistical self-promotion (or the blatant corruption with him and his family profiting from being president).

Trump’s bullying of friend and foe has dominated his domestic and foreign policy actions. We see this with his chaotic tariffs and his threats to take over Greenland. The suing of law firms, universities and media companies over DEI policies is another example. His attack on Venezuela, kidnapping Nicolás Maduro and his wife and seizure of oil tankers are the acts a dictatorial bully.

Trump claimed he would “run” Venezuela to rebuild the oil infrastructure for the benefit U.S interests and allegedly the Venezuelan people. But economic sanctions are still in place and seizures of oil tankers and bombing of small boats continues.

Regarding Trump’s empathy for people, what happened to the Palestinian “Board of Peace” or Trump’s plan to turn the rubble of Gaza into a ocean front resort? Trump’s Gaza ceasefire is a scam that Israel has violated daily.

Wars for oil are an American tradition but Trump is blunt about his intentions for Iran. On a recent Trump Social post he wrote, “With a little more time, we can easily OPEN THE HORMUZ STRAIT, TAKE THE OIL, & MAKE A FORTUNE.” The ceasefire in Iran is also just more Trump posturing.

Iran is not going to be quick and easy. Climate change is not a hoax. Trump’s tariff wars will not create manufacturing jobs. The American people are being conned and it is not just the illegal immigrants and minorities who are paying the price. Everyone is seeing the result’s of Trump’s stupidity at the gas pump and grocery store.

Trump’s behavior can no longer be tolerated. He must be held accountable for his actions. It is our  responsibility as citizens to act. There must be a massive public uprising to demand Congress end the ugly American’s dictatorship.
