“What need we fear who knows it, when none can call our power to account?” From Shakespeare’s play Macbeth.
After killing the king and seizing the throne, Macbeth is advised by Lady Macbeth that no one can hold them accountable for their misdeeds.
Today we have a president, who aspires to be king, and believes his power is unlimited. He believes no one can hold him accountable for his misdeeds, which include murdering people, invading countries, profiting from corrupt business deals, numerous violations of U.S. and international law and a total disregard for democratic governance and human rights. He has openly declared, “Nothing can stop me.”
The damage being done to the environment, the economy, international relations, the rule of law and to people is obvious. But no one seems willing to stop his destructive abuses of power – not the courts, Congress, Democrat or Republican political leaders, powerful business elites or the bipartisan foreign policy establishment.
Why are the four prior presidents silent about the obvious abuses of power and corruption of the Trump administration?
Why are business leaders not denouncing his erratic tariff actions that are driving up inflation and producing business failures and layoffs?
Why are there no Republican politicians willing to stand up for their conservative, law-and-order and family values principles?
Why are former foreign policy officials and experts doing nothing while Trump shreds eight decades of bipartisan international cooperation and trust?
Why are the military top brass meekly following “patently illegal” orders to murder people, commit acts of piracy in the Caribbean, use troops for domestic policing and political intimidation or to attack other countries that are no threat to our county?
When is the Supreme Court going to reign in the dictatorial and illegal actions of Trump and his administration?
They should be upholding the rule of law. They have no legal obligation to wait (often for years) for cases to come up the appellate ladder. They can assert “original jurisdiction” and rule expeditiously on issues of abuse of power or unconstitutional behavior. But apparently they are just fine with Trump’s ongoing actions to establish an authoritarian dictatorship.
When are the lower courts going to start holding Trump and his appointees in contempt for not following court orders? When are they going to start throwing out Trump’s numerous, frivolous “defamation” law suits and bogus “criminal investigations” against his opponents and critics? When are they going to sanction the lawyers filing these cases that are politically motivated acts of extortion and retaliation?
Regarding the situation in Minnesota, Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md) commented, “Opening fraudulent investigations into Governor Walz and Mayor Frey is a textbook example of prosecutorial misconduct. Judges must start imposing sanctions and holding lawyers accountable.”
When are these people going put patriotism before party loyalty, political expediency, or fear of retribution? When are they going to recognize that the election of Donald Trump was a terrible mistake?
It is a mistake resulting in serious damage to our country, our people, and our relationships with the rest of the world.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey points out that, “America depends on leaders that use integrity and the rule of law as the guideposts for governance.”
Trump, by his statements, actions and personal behavior, has proven beyond any reasonable doubt that he has no integrity or respect for the rule of law.
As the people of Minnesota are discovering, the list of abuses is extensive.
The murder of Renee Good is Exhibit A. The obvious excessive use of force, violations of law, due process and citizen’s constitutional rights by ICE and Border Patrol agents has been widely documented.
According to the Immigration and Human Rights Law Review, “Federal immigration agents increasingly operate behind masks and without clear identification measures, undermining core principles of due process and equal protection, creating an environment of fear and mistrust that blurs the line between legitimate law enforcement and abuse of power.”
Exhibit B is the continuing false statements about undocumented immigrants being “hardened criminals, pedophiles, rapists, gang members and violent thugs.” Numerous reliable sources have debunked these lies.
The violent thugs on our streets are ICE agents. As St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her said, “They’re not going after hardened criminals. They’re going after anyone and everyone in their path. It is unacceptable and un-American.”
Trump’s irrational, self-created crisis over Greenland is Exhibit C. None of his statements about needing to “own” Greenland are true. Greenland is not vital to our national defense. The Russians and Chinese have no reason or capacity to invade the island. If they tried, the U.S. (and Canada) is obligated under NATO to defend Greenland. As NATO allies, Denmark and Greenland have been fully cooperating with the defense of North America since 1951 and are partners in the existing, small U.S. air base that is part of our radar and satellite early warning system.
The real danger to Greenland and our national security is Trump’s belligerent rhetoric that has alienated our European allies and threatens the stability of the NATO alliance.
Trine Pertou Mach, a member of the Danish parliament, offers this advice, “The bullies of this world do not respect bootlicking and appeasement. And Trump is a bully. His actions should be met with a clear “no”...The threat against Greenland shows that we need to stop appeasing Trump. The world must unite in standing up to imperial bullying and preserving the rules-based order.”
Ralph Nader, writing in Common Dreams, says, “As President Donald Trump’s dictatorial grip over America worsens, his violations of our Constitution, federal laws, and international treaties become more brazen. Only the organized people can stop this assault on our democracy by firing him, through impeachment...Remember this: Trump’s dictatorial rampage is only going to get worse, much worse.”
Now Trump is threatening to invoke the Insurrection Act to impose martial law on Minnesota. There is an insurrection beginning to happen. But it is not a violent, armed revolt necessary to justify the use of military force. Rather it is a peaceful insurrection of resistance, noncompliance, boycott and solidarity. It is exemplified by the Minnesota ICE OUT day of action with people coming together to say “no” – no work, no school and no shopping.
The no shopping action is especially important. Hurting the profits of the ruling elite will create pressure to get King Donald fired. But it will take many people taking action to stop the assault on our democracy.
