Thanksgiving dinner in your hand

Every fall I see the press release announcing the Thanksgiving Burrito as Burrito Union’s Burrito of the Month, and every year the month passes without me getting a Thanksgiving Burrito.

That, I decided, was going to end this year.

The Thanksgiving Burrito is just what you think it is – a burrito stuffed with al the things you expect in a Thanksgiving dinner – turkey, stuffing, corn and your choice of mashed or sweet potatoes, with gravy and cranberry salsa on the side.

I chose the sweet potato version. It arrived in an insulated burrito wrapper, but the contents were on the lukewarm side, as if it had been sitting for a long time before being served. It did take an inordinate amount of time to be served. My friend ordered a pair of mixed tacos – corn and flour. But upon arrival, both were flour tacos.

We took the lukewarm burrito and two flour tacos with Minnesota stoicism and carried on.

I sliced the burrito in half to get a look at the innards for a photo, and then I sliced off a small chunk for my friend, who seemed dubious about cramming Thanksgiving into a wrapper.

I was impressed with the flavors upon the first barenaked bite. I added gravy to the second bite and felt everything come perfectly together.

For the next bite I slathered a scoop of cranberry salsa onto the burrito and, again, these things were made to be eaten together. The salsa has a delicious fruity jalapeno heat that is very pleasing in tandem with the burrito filling.

The burrito-maker seemed a might stingy when it came to adding turkey to my burrito, but the few strips I found were tasty.

I wonder if you could order the burrito filled with mashed potato on one side and sweet potato on the other, but I guess I’ll just have to go back and try another with the mashed tates.

My biggest regret is that the press release for this year’s burrito had it paired with a golden Belgian ale brewed with cranberries and called Gale Force, but the bartender said a brewing problem held up production, but Gale Force is coming, In the meantime, they recommend Fitger’s Apricot Wheat Ale with the Thanksgiving Burrito.
