The West Theatre nominated for national Preservation Award

Bob Boone of Paladin Properties has been nominated for a Rethos New Preservation Project Award. Rethos, a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit, envisions a future where old spaces spark new beginnings.
The organization approaches every project with a holistic mindset, adapting to the needs of each place and its people. By reimagining the potential of historic buildings, Rethos creates thriving spaces that uplift communities and honor the essence of what makes them special.

Preserving the past builds a stronger, more vibrant future.

This autumn Rethos contacted Boone to notify him that his renovation of The West had not gone unnoticed. It is currently on the short list of projects under consideration for a Rethos award.

On Wednesday, Oct. 9, Rethos will celebrate its annual awards gala, The Wrecking Ball: Demolishing Barriers in Historic Preservation, an event that brings together community members, stakeholders, historic preservationists, and advocates for an evening dedicated to having fun while raising funds to support preservation efforts,

When Duluth Reader publisher Bob Boone had his dream of renovating the historic West Theatre the challenges were many. In 2019, through sheer determination and a little help from his friends, Boone brought the historic Art Deco theater to life through sheer determination.

Within months the beginning of our nation’s pandemic cut the legs out from under the rollout plan. Nevertheless persistence prevailed. The West became a an invigorating venue for movies and performances.

On a Thursday evening in March 2022, Boone was delighted to place the words SOLD OUT on the West’s marquis. Jorma Kaukonen was in town, kicking off the first of many sold out shows going forward, and more exciting news waiting in the wings.
