Grasping at straws
With Vice President Kamala Harris becoming the presumptive Democratic candidate the right-wing media is literally grasping at straws in their efforts to demonize her.
The fact that Harris is much more intelligent, knowledgeable, competent and politically experienced than Trump must not be discussed. Issues of actual importance and the significant policy differences between the candidates cannot be explained to the public. But thankfully (for the media) there is the great plastic straw controversy.
Somewhere in Kamala’s nefarious, Marxist past she suggested we should use less single-use plastics like plastic straws.
They should be banned. This is not a radical idea that will destroy the economy as portrayed by Fox News. Many people and some companies are moving away from using plastic straws (that do not biodegrade) because the increasing problem of single-use plastic garbage.
But rather than debate the issue of plastic pollution, the right-wing media chooses to vilify Harris over straws. If this is all they have got, Kamala may do very well in November.
Be careful what you ask for
The religious zealots who are advocating “teaching” the Bible in public schools may not like the results of this stupid notion. There may be unintended consequences. Their objective to indoctrinate children into their extreme worldview will probably backfire.
Exposing kids to the “teachings” of Biblical superstition, antiquated dietary practices, patriarchal culture and archaic sexual mores may produce more atheists than “born again” believers. People who actually read the Bible, especially the Old Testament, often conclude there is little of value for a guiding life in a modern society.
As with all good literature, there are selected passages that are inspiring and present good moral principles. But there are also the verses about loving thy neighbor, caring for the poor, widows and orphans, turning the other cheek and beating swords into plowshares that run counter to right-wing political practice. There are the parables about the follies of humans that are fodder for sermons. But there are also the stories about concubines, adultery, sleeping with the slave girl and brothers killing brothers that are not so edifying.
So hanging the Ten Commandments on the kindergarten wall may lead to some awkward moments. The teacher may have to explain “adultery” or “coveting thy neighbor’s wife” to the children. This is the information religious nuts want banned from libraries and can get teachers fired for talking about in biology class. Does this make sense?
On a lighter note, check out the humorous song, “I Want a Marriage Like They Had in the Bible” by Roy Zimmerman. It is on YouTube.
You won’t have to vote in the future
The Donald says, “Christians, get out and vote. Just this time. You won’t have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won’t have to vote anymore...”
Is this just pandering to the religious right? Does this mean his administration will enshrine their crazy zealotry in law and end separation of church and state? Or is he referring to his stated intention to be a dictator?
Who knows what the idiot means? But with this compulsive liar and proven egomaniac, we should not take any chance with the future of democracy. Vote like it is your last opportunity.
