RIP Sen. Durenberger

Senator David Durenberger, a Lincoln Republican, died and I want to make some comments. I never met him, but I know his U.S. Senate career.
He was the kind of Republican I worked with in the Minnesota Legislature during most of my tenure. Unfortunately Lincoln Republican Party was overtaken by radicals, especially “Christian Fundamentalists,” whom President Lincoln would not support.  Even Donald Trump fooled them and got elected president 2016.

I have read that Durenburger had endorsed a number of Democrats and I am sure he did not vote for Trump, because he was a normal Republican.
Let us hope the Lincoln Republican Party will return soon!

Join the fight against nukes!

Northland Grandmothers for Peace has been partnering with a coalition of local groups to raise awareness of the dangers of nuclear weapons. We are working to get the Superior and Duluth city councils to take up resolutions urging our federal representatives to sign on to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

This international treaty would make using, developing or possessing nuclear weapons illegal, with a verifiable process of disarmament for all nations. No nation would be expected to disarm on its own.
Grandmothers made a presentation to the Superior City Council in November and councilors there declined to take any action.
The coalition (Twin Ports Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, TPCAN) is currently working with Duluth city councilors to get a resolution brought to the floor.
Nuclear weapons ARE a local issue.  The Duluth-Superior area would not be spared in a nuclear war. There are still major shipments of grain and ore moving through the ports. There is an air base with fighter jets that may present a target. Most significantly, weather patterns have us downwind of missile silos in the Dakotas. These are not “secret sites.” There is no magic technology to prevent hypersonic missiles from striking these locations.

Even a limited nuclear exchange anywhere on the globe would severely affect climate and disrupt food production everywhere. The term “tactical nukes” is a misnomer designed to keep us fooled.
Duluth and Superior can join with dozens of cities, counties and states from around the country (and the world) in saying we value our children and grandchildren. We value Lake Superior and the beautiful setting we are privileged to live in. We want our leaders to eliminate the nuclear threat and stop wasting billions on these destructive weapons.

If you or your organization would like to join the local campaign, email tpcan2022@gmail.com. Leave a phone message for the city council at: (218)730-5000 or email them: council@duluthmn.gov.
It’s up to us, all of us to prevent nuclear war.

I'll read him but don't agree with him

I enjoy reading your editorials and respect their views even though I may not agree. Ed Raymond is astute but attacks me and my cohorts because we ascribe to our religious beliefs. We do not pretend to practice medicine. Rather we respect life. I will not attack him just because his perception of the beginning of life is different from mine. Thank you
