The Surprising Beauty and the Beast

Cocktailing with Paul Whyte

This week I was thinking about heading back over the bridge to
Duluth to continue my quest for cocktails. Instead I ended up stopping
just short of the Blatnik Bridge and checked out a bar called High
Fives on Fifth. It’s located at 1310 N. 5th St. in Superior, right behind
what most still call the Chicken Spur.

Featured Bartender: Mike Freascher. Mike has been bartending for
around five years and has been at High Fives for six months where he
works several nights a week. High Fives does have a variety of liquors
that might not be found at a typical bar.

Interests & Activities: Mike likes playing poker and card games.
He runs poker tournaments at the establishment on Fridays and
Sundays at 8 p.m.

Favorite Music: Red Hot Chili Peppers, AC/DC and Atmosphere.

Featured Cocktail: Beauty and the Beast. Mike once met a girl from
the Iron Range who insisted that he try this shot. The mix is pretty
simple: there’s a shot of Tequila Rose poured into a low ball glass and
then a shot glass full of Jagermeister is dropped in so the Tequila Rose
rises flush with the shot glass. Most bars don’t have Tequila Rose, so in
a way this shot is kind of exclusive to High Fives.

How is it?: I have to be honest, I had my reservations about this shot.
I don’t really care for Tequila Rose, it reminds me of Pepto-Bismol in its
texture and color. I don’t mind Jag, but I try to stay away from it
usually.  This shot is not as bad as I thought it was going to be.
The flavors mix together surprisingly well. This isn’t a shot you’d be
putting back all night, but it would be good for pulling on an
indecisive friend who can’t make up their mind about what they want.
I was disgusted by the thought of this shot at first, but it turned out
to be alright in the end with this unlikely match up.  Have a cocktail?
