Finding Loren: Preserving the Legacy of 1st Lt. Loren E. Hintz

Veterans Memorial Hall, a program of the St. Louis County Historical Society, announces its next event in the local history discussion series, “History in a Pint.” The presentation entitled “Finding Loren: Preserving the Legacy of 1st Lt. Loren E. Hintz,” will take place at Carmody Irish Pub and Brewing, and will begin at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, June 19th. The event is free and open to the public. This month’s story of 1st Lt. Loren E. Hintz, will be told by his grandson, Duluth native Hans Wronka. A true American hero, Loren was an aviator in the Italian theater of WWII and was killed in the crash of his P-47 Thunderbolt. Hans will tell about how he embarked on an the epic journey with his family, as well as a team of Italian WWII aviation enthusiasts and archeologists, to decipher military records, maps and statements to confidently identify the crash site of grandfather’s aircraft. Wronka will be sharing his family story of how he worked with the Italian community members and landowners to support the excavation of Lt. Hintz’s crash site in July of 2016, some 70+ years after his death that tragically came just days before the end of the war in the Europe. We advise guests to park in the ramp behind and connected to the Sheraton Hotel, which is across the street from Carmody’s. Veterans Memorial Hall was established in 1910 and is a joint program of the St. Louis County Historical Society and the military service veterans of northeastern Minnesota with a mission to gather, preserve, interpret, and promote the rich and diverse human experiences of veterans, their families and communities, through museum, archival and educational programs. Its website, www.vets-hall.org, features more than 6,000 veteran stories.
