Dr. Lorena Rios Mendoza - Microplastics in the Environment

Microplastics (microbeads and plastic fibers) are being found in water and air worldwide. These tiny plastics attract toxins, are eaten by aquatic bugs and fish, and make their way up the food web to our dinner plates.
Local researcher and UWS professor, Dr. Lorena Rios, has gained national and international attention due to the unique work she and her team is doing to understand the sources, impacts, and solutions to increased plastics in the Environment. In 2015 The Federal Government passed the Microbead-Free Waters Act which bans the use of microbeads, small plastic beads, in personal care products, in large part due to Dr. Rios' pioneering work. Find out the latest on plastics in the environment and what you can do to protect air, water, and the food chain from plastic pollution.
