Who Cares What You Think, Wisconsin?

Gary G. Kohls, MD

The Unapologetic Message From George W. Bush and the Wisconsin Republican Party to the Concerned Citizens of Wisconsin (NOTE: They are NOT Your Friends) The title quote “Who Cares What You Think” came directly from the lips of the strutting, perpetually arrogant now-ex-Presiden

Clean Cut Kid (and They Made a Killer Out of Him is What They Did)

Gary G. Kohls, MD

It wasn’t a very good month for U.S. soldiers and veterans and the Pentagon, what with the ongoing revelations out of the Veterans Administration that 18 military veterans commit suicide every day and that there are more active-duty soldiers killing themselves than are being killed in combat. This war isn’t very glorious.

Guns and Drugs Don’t Mix

Gary G. Kohls, MD

In a number of past Duty to Warn columns I have attempted to warn my readers about the connections between brain-altering drugs (both illicit and prescribed) and a multitude of abnormal behaviors that s

The Guns AND Butter Myth

Gary G. Kohls, MD

Years ago I read a newspaper story about an elderly man who lived in an impoverished area of Cleveland, Ohio. The man was a friendless loner who seemed to have no caring family members. Neighbors had noticed his mail piling up on his p

Excerpts from the Writings of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Gary G. Kohls, MD

Compiled by Gary G. Kohls for Every Church A Peace Church Last week’s Duty to Warn column (January 11, 2013) discussed what appears to many people in the Christian faith-based peace and justice movement to be a co

“Now That He Is Safely Dead”: Silencing the Voice of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Gary G. Kohls, MD

“Now That He Is Safely Dead” Now that he is safely dead let us praise him, build monuments to his glory, sing hosannas to his name. Dead men make such convenient heroes. They cannot rise to challenge the images we would fashion from their lives. And besides, it is easier to build monuments than to make a better world. – Carl Wendell Hines

Unlearned Lessons from World War I: the Christmas Truce of 1914

Gary G. Kohls, MD

In World War I, as happens to be true in most wars, the Christian church leadership joined in the patriotic fervor with very un-Christlike, nationalistic, and racial/religious superiority stances. Astonishingly, religious leaders on every side of the conflict truly believed that God was on their particular side. And so

The Massacre at Sandy Hook and the Elephant in the Room

Gary G. Kohls, MD

Since the most recent American school shooting-of-the-month that occurred on 12-14-12, thousands of aware mental health professionals, psychiatric survivors, and victims of drug-induced violence have been watching and listening in vain for any of the major TV or radio networks to even breathe a single word about the likely possibility that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooter (widely identified as having had a very

The First Casualty of War is Truth; Gallipoli, the ANZAC Spirit Myth and Waltzing Matilda

Gary G. Kohls, MD

“We’re not made by God to mass kill one another, and that’s backed up by the Gospels. Lying and war are always associated. Pay attention to the war-makers when they try to defend their current war. If they’re moving their lips they’re lying.” -- quote from Catholic Worker ex-priest and antiwar activist, the late Philip Berri

Pearl Harbor, the Day of Infamy and FDR If Work Won’t set us Free, Will Truth do the Job?

Gary G. Kohls, MD

This is the week that the corporate media, careful to not upset the uber-patriots and nationalists among us, will be featuring reports about the December 7, 1941 Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. In addition to hearing stories about those beginnings of WWII (at least for the US), we may also be hearing reports

The National Day of Mourning (a.k.a. Thanksgiving Day) Falls on Nov. 22 This Year, but It Has Nothing To Do with JFK’s Assassination

Gary G. Kohls, MD

“Since 1970, Native Americans have gathered at noon on Cole’s Hill in Plymouth to commemorate a National Day of Mourning on the US Thanksgiving holiday. Many Native Americans do not celebrate the arrival of the Pilgrims and other European settlers. To them, Thanksgiving Day is a reminder of the genocide of millions of their people, the theft of their lands, and the relentless assault on their culture. Participants in a National Day of Mourning hon

11/9 and 9/11: And We Thought We Were Free

Gary G. Kohls, MD

Seventy-four years ago this week, on 11/9/38, the horrifying event occurred that the Nazi Party called Krystallnacht. It could be said that the events of that night represented the official start of Adolf Hitler’s “endless war” against the Jews, but the methods used to justify that war were not an aberration.

Election’s Over: What Should We Have Learned, and What Should We Do Next Time?

Gary G. Kohls, MD

This week’s column is being written in the closing throes of the most propagandistic, most costly, most wasteful, nastiest election of all time, bar none. And it is obvious to me that most of the venom and untruths have been coming from (often anonymous) right-wing political or religious groups or the likes of cunning political operatives and/or moneyed billiona

Two Essays from the Past: On the 10th Anniversary of the Strange Death of Paul Wellstone

Gary G. Kohls, MD

October 25th, a week and a half before 2012’s election day, is the 10th anniversary of the death of Paul Wellstone. A number of commemorative events occurred during the week, but sadly, the loss of this courageous patriot will soon be forgotten by voters who should care enormously that his death was very likely, ac

And Then They Came for the Gays: Paragraph 175 and the Pink Triangle

Gary G. Kohls, MD

The famous poem above was written by the courageous German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemoller in the years after he was liberated from one of Adolf Hitler’s concentration camps. As was the case with most conservative Protestant clergymen and their congregants, Niemoller despised the Weimar democratic r

The GOP’s Hidden, Unspoken “Big Tent” Agenda: “We Don’t Want No More Niggers in the White House”

Gary G. Kohls, MD

Anyone who watched the two national political conventions last month couldn’t help but be impressed with the nearly total lack of racial diversity at the (“White’s Only”) Republican National Convention. The large number of racially-diverse delegates at the Democratic National Convention was truly impressive. It should be obvious that white racism will be a huge

Inconvenient Truths About Military Air Shows: Doing the Math

Suicide and the Soldier

Gary G. Kohls, MD

Eleven years ago, the NeoConservative Cheney/Bush/Rove/Rumsfeld administration, with the enthusiastic support of the Radical Religious Right, started, by a series of treasonous lies, its so-called endless war on “terrorism”, most of which, in actuality, had been provoked by decades of anti-Muslim, anti-Arab and blindly pro-Israel US foreign policies.

A Message from Courageous Whistle-blower Julian Assange

Gary G. Kohls, MD

Hiroshima and The Glorification of American Militarism

Gary G. Kohls, MD

Last week was the 67th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the whole truth of which has been heavily censored and mythologized, starting with the news of the event that created understandable joy because of the end of that awful war.

What were the brain-altering psych drugs that the Batman Shooter might have been taking or withdrawing from? Part Two

Gary G. Kohls, MD

Dramatic and recurring mass shootings seem to be a peculiarly American phenomenon, given the fact that every other nation that experiences such shootings appropriately passes legislation that effectively prevents repeat atrocities. Not in America, however, thanks to the National Rifle Association and the numerous well-paid weapons manufacturing lobbyists who threaten into silence and inaction most of our elected officials in DC, both Republican and Democrat, who can’t seem to resist taking the bribes.

“Organized Crime” and “A Declaration of War”

Gary G. Kohls, MD

“Behind every great fortune, there is a crime.” – Honore de Balzac For this week’s Duty to Warn column, I simply offer the lyrics from two related songs from the little-known anti-war, anti-fascist, anti-predatory capitalist protest CD “If All the Land Would Rise.”

Anti-Tyranny Quotes for These Times Historical Quotes of Wisdom - Compiled by Gary G. Kohls, MD

Gary G. Kohls, MD

I recently came upon a quote from Henry David Thoreau, who many regard as the father of nonviolent civil disobedience. Thoreau’s writings on the subject of active, nonviolent resistance to authority inspired Leo Tolstoy, Mohandas Gandhi, Martin Luther King and innumerable other proponents of non-violent resistance to tyranny, including today’s Occupy Wall Street movement. If Thoreau

Clarence Jordan, Conscientious Objector to War and Killing: More Lessons From the History of American Fascism, Racism, Militarism, and Economic Oppression

Gary G. Kohls, MD

This year, 2012, would have been the 100th birthday anniversaries of Koinonia Farm’s courageous founder Clarence Jordan and his equally courageous life partner and wife Florence. Koinonia Farm, founded in 1942, is 70 years old this year. Koinonia was an innovative interracial farming commune that was set up according to the New Testament model of the pacifist, socialist early Christian communities formed in the first generation CE, based on the ethical values of Jesus of Nazareth. Those communities were described in the Acts of the Apostles. Jordan often referred to Acts 2:44 as his inspiration in establishing Koinonia Farm. The passage says, “And all that believed were together, and had all things in common; and sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.”

The People Don’t Want War – And Why Real Patriots Should Listen to Hermann Goering’s Last Words

Gary G. Kohls, MD

“Why of course the people don’t want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don’t want war: neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”

Wisconsin Recall Elections: Are the 20 Year-old Methods of Ralph Reed and the Christian Coalition Coming to Fruition?

Gary G. Kohls, MD

”It (the Christian Coalition’s political agenda) is like guerrilla warfare. If you reveal your location, all it does is allow your opponent to improve his artillery bearings. It’s better to move quietly, with stealth, under cover of night. You’ve got two choices: You can wear camies and shimmy along on your belly, or you can put on a red coat and stand up for everyone to see. It comes down to whether you want to be the British army in the Revolutionary War or the Viet Cong. History tells us which tactic was more effective.” -- Ralph Reed, (Los Angeles Times - 3-22-92)

How Fascist-Leaning Are the Candidates and Their Paymasters?

Gary G. Kohls, MD

The recall election of Wisconsin Republican governor and preacher’s kid Scott Walker will be held next week. Several of Walker’s fellow NeoConservative legislators are also on the recall ballot for betraying many of their constituents by…

Has There Been a Fascist Coup in This Country?

Gary G. Kohls, MD

Many of us who are anti-imperialists and therefore also antifascists will sadly recall that following the stolen presidential election of 2004, John Kerry inexplicably and far too readily conceded defeat, despite the evidence that the infamous Diebold voting machine fraud had given the Cheney/Rumsfeld/Rove/Bush administration control of the White House for another four years. Following the 2004 electoral coup (see the powerful documentary about the election fraud of 2000, entitled “Unprecedented: The Battle for the Presidency in Florida and the Undermining of Democracy in America”), a politically savvy and historically knowledgeable acquaintance of mine from the East Coast (who happens to be Jewish) wrote an important essay that I attach below.

The Neurological, Psychological, and Spiritual Costs of War and Violence

Gary G. Kohls, MD

For the last decade of my 40-year career as a family physician, I practiced what was best termed holistic mental health care (i.e., using non-drug approaches, gradual psych drug withdrawal, nutritional therapy for the brain, and psychoeducational psychotherapy to achieve mental wellness).
